Top five: best tasting dog food

What makes the best tasting dog food is all up to your dog’s preferences. But, looking through customer reviews can help you to determine if your picky pup may like a certain food. If your dog doesn’t enjoy his or her food, they may under-eat. To provide your dog with optimal nutrition, you will need to select a food that your picky eater will go for. Taste can be subjective, but you can increase the chances a picky pooch will enjoy with a little research. This is why I have done the hard work for you, to help you find the best-tasting food for your dog.

What makes dog food tasty?

Of course, each dog will have their own preferences. But, there are a few things that dogs generally find appetizing. Dogs respond more to smell than taste, and canned food tends to have a stronger scent than kibble. So if you have a picky eater, mixing wet food with kibble can help. Try to select food that smells flavourful, fresh, and inviting. Keeping dry food fresh can also help to preserve the scent and taste. The easiest way to do this is by using an airtight container. Dog’s do have a sweet tooth and fruits and veggies can be a little sweet. And like us, they appreciate variety in their diet.

Consider your behavior around mealtimes. When your dog is being picky, what do you do? If you are offering some delicious roast beef after they refused the kibble, this could be a part of the problem. Dogs will hold out for more delicious food.

Common dog dislikes

Unlike us, dogs do not find salt very tasty. I am surprised to learn it does not make food more palatable to them. Which is a good thing, because too much salt isn’t very healthy.

Common dog food allergies

If your dog has been eating the same type of dog food for a long time, and they are now refusing it this can be alarming. In this situation, there is a possibility that they have become allergic to their food. Other signs of food allergies include a sensitive stomach and itchy skin. If your dog is very picky, and showing these signs, it’s time for a trip to the vet. Some common allergens include chicken, wheat, eggs, beef, soy, dairy, lamb, pork, rabbit, and fish. So, pretty much any dog food could be the culprit of an allergy. The vet will be able to test and verify any allergies and recommend alternative food options.

Overall best tasting dog food

Well, I guess it’s time for the results of the taste test. Kidding! I did not actually taste any of these foods and I am definitely not about to. Finding out your dog’s preferences with trial and error will help you to determine what to feed them. Yet, adding wet food to kibble or as a stand-alone meal will encourage your picky dog to eat more.

Try to determine: does your dog like a stew texture or more of a pate? Or would your dog enjoy a variety of foods in the rotation? Experiment with a few different wet foods to find out. At this stage, buying single cans is a good way to go. For example, if you determine that your dog loves the texture of a stew, experiment with a stew variety pack. Then you can see what types of flavors they prefer. Knowing your dog’s preferences can help a lot, and you might be surprised by what you discover.

Keep in mind that dogs’ tastes may change over time and they may not enjoy all variations. My dog Thor adores lamb from some brands, but rejects others! He also used to like salmon, but the few times I have offered it to him recently, he has refused it. It’s interesting to notice those changes as he matures. I try to keep variety in Thor’s diet by switching up his wet food often, but he always eats the same kibble.

If I have to pick one of these top five best tasting dog foods, I would pick Purina Pro Plan SAVOR Adult Canned Wet Dog Food. I know my dog Thor enjoys wet food that has this type of texture. Purina Pro Plan is a super premium food that vets and breeders recommend. I know that it is high-quality food. Plus, it’s in the name “savor”. This dog food is designed to be tasty!
